Blowin’ in the Wind

Maintenance, repair, and installation may not be an industry you’re hiring for but when an occupation has projected growth of 108% by 2024, people take notice. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, wind turbine service technicians are hot! Making an average of $51,050 per year, it’s a career with a very bright future. As of December 2016, installed wind capacity for the US stood at 86 gigawatts (GW). Over 50,000 wind turbines supply this capacity and they all have to be maintained. If you’re curious about what’s involved, check out this video posted by a man on the job.1

As described by the BLS, Wind turbine service technicians (wind techs) install, maintain, and repair wind turbines. Wind turbine service technicians generally work outdoors in confined spaces and often at great heights. Although the majority of wind techs work full time, they may also be on call to handle emergencies during evenings and weekends. Most wind turbine service technicians learn their trade by attending a technical school or are trained on the job by their employer.2

Wind electricity generation is expected to grow over the coming decade, meaning that additional technicians will be needed to install and maintain new turbines. Competition to hire these in-demand professionals will only get more fierce in the coming years.3
