The AI Interview Experience

Most of us are used to interviewing with a hiring manager, HR recruiter, or department supervisor. In short, we’re used to speaking to a human being. But what about interviewing with a computer?

Many companies are choosing to streamline their interview process by conducting their pre-screening interviews using AI software created by innovators such as HireVue and Mya Systems.¹ HireVue’s video interview platform in particular has become a popular tool among companies looking to more efficiently conduct their pre-screening interviews.

So how does an interview with AI software go, exactly? First, the applicant pulls up the company’s website on their computer or downloads the hiring application on their smartphone. The applicant may then watch a video with the question in it, or interact with automated assistants or chatbots that simulate human conversations. They will then have the ability to record their answer as many times as they like. They’ll upload their video response, and repeat the process for the rest of the questions. All the while the AI software analyzes the candidate’s answers using a combination of voice and facial recognition software and a ranking algorithm.² Companies will then use this algorithm to determine if the applicant meets their needs.

Since these AI interviews are becoming more and more prevalent, jobseekers will need to find ways to prepare for them. A few tips include:

  • Find a quiet room with good lighting and a good internet connection.
  • Practice exaggerating your facial expressions so they will be more easily picked up by the AI.
  • Remember that even though it’s with AI software, this is still a job interview, so many of the same rules still apply, i.e. you should still dress professionally, speak clearly and concisely, and be truthful.
